Making space for urban ecology – A conversation with Salvador Rueda

For our Christchurch and Auckland members UDF warmly invites you to join us for this exclusive opportunity to hear Salvador Rueda speak about the future of urban design and the transformative power of Superblocks.

Salvador Rueda is one of the world’s most significant urban placemakers. His work has focused on different aspects of the urban environment from an integrated perspective. He has been coordinator of renovation and revitalisation programmes in the Ciutat Vella (Old City) district of Barcelona, and since 2000 has been director of the Urban Ecology Agency of Barcelona, which has worked on a number of projects aimed at reorienting cities towards a more sustainable model. Salvador Rueda has a rich history as the coordinator of renovation and revitalization programs in the Ciutat Vella (Old City) district of Barcelona. His groundbreaking contribution lies in the invention of Barcelona’s Superblocks, an urban design concept that transforms street space traditionally reserved for motor vehicles into dynamic, multi-functional zones for walking, cycling, play, and more, by managing vehicle access.
