Meditations of a Landscape Architect (Six Point Press) brings together David Irwin’s ongoing enquiry into design, shaped through four decades of landscape architecture and urban design practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Through observations, stories, photographs and digressions, he moves between philosophical thought, professional practice and everyday life: cities, coastal edges, oceanscapes, drawing, family and friends, home and coffee. Ideas recur—let the land breathe; hold the pen lightly; look to the horizon—as Irwin considers what matters in design, what we choose to change and what might be better left alone.
The essays are part of a design process: a way of testing ideas, recording how his thinking has developed and sharing the questions and answers that continue to shape his practice. Together, they document an ongoing enquiry into our natural and built environments, and what design might mean for the future.
