Cities in Australia and Aotearoa share a common challenge: intensifying existing suburbs on a lot-by-lot basis, guided by zones and guidelines, rather than through coordinated place plans.

We have all seen the consequences when this has gone wrong – whole suburbs of villa units and townhouses, concrete paving and insufficient canopy coverage.

For this session we will hear from three contexts looking to improve design quality, housing diversity and amenity through the intensification of our existing suburbs.

Speakers –

  • Kate Fitzgerald – Whispering Smith Architects
  • David Hattam – Ōtautahi Christchurch urban designer
  • MC Jack Davies – Wardle Architects
