In the webinar, MRCagney urban designers Marita Hunt and Kent Lundberg hosted Seattle-based architect and advocate Michael Eliason of Larch Lab. Michael talked about sustainable development models from around the world, the structural conditions that allow them, and ways to surmount barriers in places like Seattle and Auckland. Recently, Michael’s been advocating for ‘point access blocks’ – the ability to legally build small apartment buildings with a single stairway, which makes it much easier to create neighbourhoods with diverse types of medium density homes. A couple of days after our webinar, Washington State passed a bill legalising exactly that in its building code! Michael and Larch Lab’s work demonstrates the power of persistent advocacy and a clear vision.
