Complete Streets: The Lost Art of Street Design
Course Overview

This one day course re-introduces participants to designing streets for people, not just streets for cars. Streets are one of our most valuable community assets; they have been around for thousands of years and have been the centre of our social networking, our economy, our play space and our mobility. In the last 60 or 70 years however, streets have been more and more dedicated to the car, and are no longer quite so suitable for their original purposes.

This interactive course examines how this “design for cars not people” philosophy impacts the shape of our cities, towns and villages and what might need to be done to change this.

The course covers principles used in Auckland’s new Urban Street and Road Design Guide. It explores high-level principles of street design, and is suitable for a range of professionals interested in street design, including politicians, planners and engineers. Participants will learn from practitioners at the
forefront of street design in New Zealand and Australia.

Course Presenter
The course will be presented by Steven Burgess, principal author of “Complete Streets, A Guideline for Urban Street Design” published by IPWEAQ in 2010, and contributor to the development of the AT Urban Streets and Road Design Guide and NACTO’s Global Street Design Guide, published
in 2016. He is an engineer and urban strategist with an extensive mix of public and private sector experience, and currently sits on the NACTO Global Streets Board.
