Mayor Phil Goff commented that “making Queen Street and adjoining streets a pedestrian and public transport zone underpins our desire to put people at the heart of our city centre”. Goff said “we want Queen Street to be a great place to walk, gather, relax and enjoy”. 

To enable streets to be places for people, the Access for Everyone initiative eliminates through traffic. People travelling by car will instead use the motorway ring road to get to opposite sides of the city. Necessary car trips to the city centre will involve vehicles exiting the city at the same place they entered.  

The plan addresses the challenges of exploding city growth. Complementing future public transport plans (like light rail on Queen Street), the plan enables a vision of a highly accessible and attractive CBD for workers, residents and visitors.
